The article analyses the application of marker-assisted selection (MAS) and molecular genotyping methods in the development of new cultivars and hybrids of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and melon (Cucumis melo). The advantages of SSR, SNP, CAPS, KASP, SCAR and InDel markers, markers linked to disease- and pestresistance genes (Fom-1/Fom-2, Fon-1/Fon-2, Pm, Vat, nsv), and possibilities for selection of fruit-quality traits are considered. The role of gene pyramiding and modern high-throughput genotyping platforms in improving breeding efficiency is substantiated.
