This article comprehensively analyses the role of toponyms in linguistics, their lexico-semantic structure, etymological bases and cultural-functional features. The study considers toponyms not simply as geographical designations, but as linguistic expressions of folk thinking, historical memory, regional identity and cultural heritage. On the example of such Uzbek oikonyms as Samarkand, Andijan and Yangiyar, the author reveals the process of formation of names, their semantic load and significance in the historical and political context. The element ‘kand’ and its traces in Sogdian and Persian languages, as well as the ideological function of Soviet toponyms are analysed in particular detail. The article also examines toponymic units such as hydronyms, oronyms, speleonyms, urbanonyms from the point of view of phonetics, morphology and semantics. The study, conducted at the intersection of linguistics, history, culture and geography, reveals the multilayered nature of toponyms and emphasises their importance as an important source for regional linguistics and onomastic research. The article represents an actual methodological basis for theoretical and applied linguistic research.
