The concept of ‘meaning‘ holds significant importance within the framework of Structural-Functional linguistics, which emerged as a response to traditional linguistic theories by focusing on how linguistic structures function in communication. This study investigates the role and significance of ‘meaning‘ in Structural-Functional linguistics, particularly in relation to its ability to explain how language serves communicative purposes and how meaning is derived from linguistic structures. The research delves into the central tenets of Structural-Functional linguistics, including the relationship between form and function, the dynamic interaction of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and the understanding of how language operates in social contexts. This paper aims to explore the ways in which meaning is constructed, transmitted, and interpreted within different linguistic structures, paying close attention to both theoretical and practical applications in linguistics. By analyzing various linguistic examples, the paper demonstrates the crucial role of meaning in ensuring effective communication, while also considering how the field has evolved over time and its relevance in contemporary linguistic studies. The findings underscore the necessity of understanding meaning not only as an abstract notion but as a practical component that is shaped by the linguistic system.
