The article comparatively examines discourse markers in Uzbek and English spoken discourse from an interactive and pragmatic perspective. The analysis focuses on how markers initiate talk, maintain turns, introduce clarification, soften stance, redirect topics and formulate conclusions. The study shows that Uzbek discourse markers are more strongly connected with interpersonal alignment, respect and emotional coordination, whereas English markers more actively segment discourse, regulate turn-taking and frame arguments. The findings are relevant for comparative pragmatics, translation studies and foreign language teaching.
