Annotatsiya

Any discussion of democracy traditionally begins with antiquity. It was in Ancient Greece that the type of public self-government that has haunted thinkers of all times and nations emerged. Three key ideas that shaped the development of Western civilization were laid down here. First, the recognition of the importance of the individual, entitled to his or her own opinion and willing to defend it. Second, the ability and willingness to think rationally and apply rational arguments in public debates on public affairs. Words and speech, not force, became instruments of political struggle. Third, the understanding of the importance of the state as the voice of the general will. From the sixth century BC to the present day, these three ideas have been the subject of heated debate. Some of the ideas that emerged during these debates will be discussed in this lecture.
