In modern journalism, where artificial intelligence is being integrated into the workflow, a concept is emerging that divides authorial responsibility between reporters and the algorithmic system at several levels of the editorial process. This transformation is particularly rapid in China, where state media and major tech corporations are using automated platforms on a scale unseen elsewhere. This article examines the structure of collaboration between algorithms and journalists in Chinese news production, drawing on a typology of three different co-authorship models proposed by Peng Lan, a professor at the School of Journalism at University of China. A three-level theory of human-machine relationships in intelligent news production—the instrumental level, the partnership level, and the mutually competitive level—forms the theoretical basis for the analysis. Co-authorship in Chinese journalism is not a homogeneous phenomenon, but rather a complex human-machine relationship shaped by the context, content type, and regulatory environment characteristic of the Chinese media system.
