The article examines the traditions of "Ashura" and their regional characteristics in Shiite communities. In particular, the history of the emergence of the Ashura ritual and its characteristic features are explored. It is explained that the most famous tradition associated with Ashura is the mourning rituals, during which Shiites express deep sorrow over the death of Imam Hussein and his companions. The regional features of the Ashura tradition in Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the majority of the population professes the Shiite faith, were also studied and compared. During Ashura in Iran and Iraq, ritual sites include the courtyards of mosques, madrassas, and special rooms such as husaynikhana and ravzakhani, where stories of the sufferings of Imam Hussein, his relatives and companions are read.
