The article examines the challenging cases of forming singular and plural noun forms in the Russian language, which students encounter in schools. The main difficulties related to word formation, exceptions, and the influence of students' native language are analyzed. Examples from school textbooks are provided, and methodological recommendations for teaching this topic are proposed. As a result of the analysis, the most problematic categories of nouns were identified, and effective methodological techniques for mastering them were suggested.
