Epistemic and deontic modality in daily horoscopes: a corpus-based study of english and uzbek

Annotatsiya

Drawing on a corpus of about 64,000 words of daily horoscopes, the article compares how English and Uzbek express epistemic and deontic modality. In English the epistemic load is spread across several modal verbs; in Uzbek it rests mainly on one item, mumkin “possible”. Despite this difference, both languages systematically avoid markers of high certainty and strong obligation, which supports the hypothesis of pragmatic convergence in the genre.
