One of the most prominent figures in Turkish literature history, Ali Shir Nevaî, lived in an era where Persian was used as the dominant language by scholars. Nevaî, who was an authority on both Persian and Turkish, demonstrated in his work Muhâkemetü’l Lugateyn that Turkish is superior to Persian in terms of literary arts, grammar, and phonetics. Moreover, Nevaî believed that the preference for Turkish as the mother tongue was essential for addressing the people in their own language. Ali Shir Nevaî was a scholar, mystic, philosopher, and Sufi with profound knowledge in literary sciences, social sciences, tafsir (interpretation of the Qur'an), hadith, kalam (Islamic theology), fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and mysticism. His works, couplets, and ideas reflect a rich body of knowledge. Nevaî’s views on addressing the people in their own language align with the verses found in the Qur'an in Surahs Al-Baqara, Ar-Rum, Al-Hujurat, and Ar-Rahman. In this presentation, Nevaî’s preference for the Turkish language and the language of the people will be discussed within the framework of these verses.
