The impact of artificial intelligence on efl learners’ writing skills: opportunities and challenges

The growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into language education is reshaping the ways in which English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners develop their writing competence. This article examines the dual influence of AI-powered tools on learners’ written production, focusing on both their educational potential and the challenges associated with their use. Particular attention is given to the role of AI in supporting idea generation, lexical development, grammatical accuracy, text organization, and revision practices. AI-assisted feedback may help learners identify linguistic weaknesses, explore alternative expressions,and improve the clarity and coherence of their written work. Nevertheless, the educational value of these technologies depends on howcritically and purposefully learners engage with them. Excessive dependence on automated suggestions may weaken independent decision-making, reduce individual authorial expression, and raise concerns about academic integrity, information reliability, and responsible technology use. The article emphasizes the importance of integrating AI into EFL writing instruction as a supportive learning resource rather than a substitute for learners’ cognitive effort. It highlights the need for pedagogical guidance that combines technological assistance with critical thinking, independent composition, and reflective revision. Such an approach can help learners benefit from AI-based tools while preserving originality, authorship, and the development of sustainable writing skills.
