Major approaches to speech acts theory and politeness strategies in contemporary linguistics

Speech Acts Theory and politeness strategies represent two fundamental areas of contemporary pragmatics that explore the relationship between linguistic expressions, communicative intentions, and social interaction. Speech Acts Theory examines how speakers use language to perform actions, including requesting, promising, apologizing, refusing, and expressing opinions, whereas politeness theory investigates how linguistic choices contribute to the maintenance of interpersonal relationships, the negotiation of social identities, and the management of potential conflicts. This article aims to examine the major theoretical approaches to Speech Acts Theory and politeness strategies in contemporary linguistics, focusing on their conceptual foundations, principal representatives, analytical principles, and practical applications in communication. The study employs a qualitative, descriptive-analytical methodology based on a critical review of influential scholarly contributions by Austin, Searle, Grice, Brown and Levinson, Leech, Watts, and Culpeper. Particular attention is given to Austin’s distinction between locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts; Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts; Grice’s theory of conversational implicature; Brown and Levinson’s face-based model of politeness; Leech’s pragmatic approach; and discursive perspectives on politeness and impoliteness. The analysis demonstrates that speech acts and politeness strategies are closely interconnected, as the interpretation of an utterance depends not only on its grammatical structure and literal meaning but also on the speaker’s communicative intention, the relationship between interlocutors, and the sociocultural context in which communication takes place.
