Developing professional vocabulary of music students in english through context-based learning

Annotatsiya

This article examines the development of English professional vocabulary among music students through context-based instruction. The main objective of the study is to substantiate the effectiveness of teaching music-related terms and expressions not through isolated memorization, but by integrating them into meaningful professional situations, authentic music texts, musical scores, listening activities, rehearsals, and performance practices. The article highlights the importance of context-based instruction in helping students understand and retain new vocabulary, interpret word meanings according to specific situations, and use terminology accurately in spoken and written communication. Furthermore, it explores the potential of practical activities such as listening comprehension, text analysis, musical excerpt analysis, role-playing, comparison, and performance evaluation in teaching professional terms, including rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, tempo, pitch, texture, rehearsal, performance, and composition. The study employs descriptive, contextual-semantic, and pedagogical analysis methods. The findings suggest that teaching professional vocabulary in authentic and professionally relevant contexts facilitates a deeper understanding of word meanings, promotes long-term retention, and supports the integration of new terms into students’ active vocabulary. In addition, this approach prepares students to express their ideas about music confidently in English, describe and analyze musical works and performances, justify their opinions, and use specialized terminology appropriately in professional communication. In conclusion, context-based instruction is regarded as an effective pedagogical approach that enhances not only music students’ professional vocabulary knowledge but also their professional communicative competence in English.
