Language contact, code-switching, and social identity in multilingual communication: a comparative sociolinguistic analysis

This article examines the relationship between language contact, code-switching, and social identity in multilingual communication from a comparative sociolinguistic perspective. The study focuses on the ways multilingual speakers select, combine, and alternate linguistic resources according to communicative context, interpersonal relationships, and socially meaningful positions. Drawing on interactional sociolinguistics, codeswitching theory, and sociocultural approaches to identity, the article synthesizes theoretical and empirical findings from multilingual communities in different parts of the world. Particular attention is given to the structural, pragmatic, and social functions of code-switching, including contextualization, solidarity, social distance, stance, group affiliation, and identity positioning. The analysis demonstrates that multilingual speech cannot be adequately interpreted as a simple alternation between separate linguistic systems. Rather, speakers mobilize flexible linguistic repertoires to construct meaning ad negotiate relationships. At the same time, language alternation should not automatically be interpreted as an expression of identity. Its meaning depends on interactional context, participants, communicative goals, and broader sociolinguistic conditions.
