Annotatsiya

This article identifies six recurrent methods by which satirical and humorous effects are created in whole political speeches in English, and compares their use in British, American and Australian political communication. A method is defined as a recurrent combination of a linguistic means, a comic mechanism, a position in the speech and a strategic aim. The material comprises speeches and exchanges from UK and Australian parliamentary records, US presidential debates and White House Correspondents’ Association Dinneraddresses, analysed through compositional, linguopragmatic and comparative analysis. Six methods were identified: the two-beat method, the offer–expectation–reversal sequence, the phonetic-allusive pun, multimodal proof, the explicitation of irony and the echoic counter-attack. Humour is distributed systematically across speech composition, and political jokes are often products of institutional authorship rather than of the speaker alone. The comparison shows three tendencies: short, intellectual put-downs and mock impoliteness in British Prime Minister’s Questions; stand-up composition and self-irony in American ritual genres; and direct figurative insults and echoic counter-attacks in Australian Question Time. A retort succeeds when it creates a new script opposition, fits the pragmatic norms of the setting and stays relevant to the political argument. The findings link the linguistic description of humour with the institutional structure of political systems.
