A comparative pragmatic analysis of politeness in english and uzbek prompts and chatgpt responses

The growing use of generative AI has opened up a new way for people to talk to machines. When users write prompts, they ask for information, explanations, advice, and other kinds of help. In these interactions, politeness matters a lot, because the same request can be made in different ways in different languages. This study looks at how politeness is used in English and Uzbek prompts written for ChatGPT, and whether the politeness of the prompt affects the politeness of the AI's response. The research is based on a specially built collection of English and Uzbek prompts that represent similar situations but different levels of politeness. The ChatGPTresponses are then analyzed by looking at politeness markers, indirectness, modal expressions, mitigation, respectful forms, and supportive expressions. The findings are presented in statistical tables and diagrams. By comparing English and Uzbek in the same communicative contexts, the study aims to find cross-linguistic patterns in human-AI interaction and to see whether ChatGPT maintains, changes, or increases the politeness expressed by users. This research contributes to the growing field of human-AI pragmatics by offering an English–Uzbek comparative perspective on politeness in prompt-based communication.
