Annotatsiya

This article examines gender-specific paralinguistic means intonation, voice quality, pitch, tempo, gesture, facial expression, gaze, posture, and silence and their pragmatic functions in Uzbek and English communication. The study investigates how female and male speakers of the two languages employ paralinguistic resources to construct meaning, express emotion, negotiate politeness, and organize discourse. It explores the interaction between paralanguage, gender identity, and sociocultural norms, paying particular attention to how collectivist values and honorific traditions shape Uzbek gendered communication in comparison with the more individualist, pragmatically mediated patterns of English. Practical examples from institutional, interpersonal, and intercultural contexts illustrate how paralinguistic strategies help speakers of both languages achieve communicative goals and influence listener interpretation. The analysis also highlights the multimodal nature of gendered communication, demonstrating that vocal and bodily signals acquire their communicative value through their interaction with social roles, interpersonal distance, and situational expectations. Particular attention is given to the pragmatic contribution of pauses, silence, gaze, facial expression, and speech tempo, which may regulate turn-taking, indicate hesitation or emphasis, manage interpersonal distance, and modify the perceived force of verbal expressions. The comparative perspective further reveals that paralinguistic interpretation is influenced by cultural conventions and cannot be separated from factors such as age, status, professional role, and degree of familiarity between interlocutors. These observations emphasize the importance of incorporating paralinguistic awareness into foreign-language instruction, intercultural communication training, and professional communication practices. The study also identifies prospects for further research through acoustic analysis, multimodal corpora, and empirical comparison of naturally occurring Uzbek and English speech.
