The present article examines the gender characteristics of the Modesty Maxim in English and Uzbek from a sociolinguistic and pragmatic perspective. The Modesty Maxim, formulated within Geoffrey Leech’s theory of politeness, encourages speakers to minimize self-praise and maximize expressions that enhance or praise others. Although modesty represents a broadly recognizable communicative value, its linguistic realization is strongly influenced by cultural norms, social roles, interpersonal relations, age, status, and gender expectations. The study compares the ways in which male and female speakers may realize modesty in English and Uzbek discourse, focusing on self-deprecation, hedging, mitigation, indirectness, acceptance and rejection of compliments, and the use of respectful expressions.
