The role of metaphor in the formation of english phraseological units

This article investigates the role of metaphor in the formation of English phraseological units based on semantic and cognitive approaches. The relationship between metaphorical transfer, figurative motivation, and the conceptual spheres of source and target domains in the emergence of phraseological meaning is analyzed. The role of concrete physical experience in expressing abstract concepts is revealed using English units such as break the ice, add fuel to the fire, see the light, be on thin ice, hit the nail on the head and keep one's head above water. The research results demonstrate that metaphor is not only a means of ensuring the imagery of phraseological units but also an important cognitive mechanism involved in their semantic formation and conceptual motivation.
