Pragmatic and stylistic foundations of translation methods in literary translation

Annotatsiya

This article examines the pragmatic and stylistic foundations of translation methods in literary translation. Literary translation is regarded not merely as the transfer of linguistic units from a source language into a target language, but as a complex process of reconstructing meaning, aesthetic effect, communicative intention, and stylistic individuality. The study focuses on the relationship between translation methods and the pragmatic purposes of a literary text, as well as the role of stylistic factors in determining translators' choices. Particular attention is paid to such translation methods and strategies as literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation, borrowing, compensation, explicitation, and cultural substitution. The article draws upon major theoretical approaches developed by Vinay and Darbelnet, Nida, Catford, Newmark, Baker, Chesterman, Nord, and Vermeer. It argues that the effectiveness of a translation method cannot be evaluated exclusively according to formal linguistic correspondence. Rather, the translator's choice should depend on the pragmatic function of the text, the intended effect on the target reader, the stylistic features of the original, and the cultural and communicative conditions of translation. The findings demonstrate that successful literary translation requires a flexible and functionally motivated combination of different translation methods in order to preserve both the semantic content and the artistic-pragmatic value of the original work.
