PSYCHOLINGUISTIC REALIZATION OF KILLER AND VICTIM IMAGES IN LITERARY DISCOURSE AND THEIR CINEMATIC REPRESENTATION (Based on Thomas Harris's "The Silence of the Lambs")

Annotatsiya

This paper presents an extensive psycholinguistic investigation of the killer (Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb) and victim (Clarice Starling, Catherine Martin) archetypes as originally constructed in Thomas Harris's 1988 novel The Silence of the Lambs and subsequently reimagined in Jonathan Demme's 1991 Academy Award- winning film adaptation. By bridging cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and film semiotics, the study explores how verbal narrative mechanisms translate into multi- modal cinematographic codes. The research employs a rigorous comparative methodology, juxtaposing lexical-semantic fields, conceptual metaphors, speech act configurations, and internal focalization from the literary text against framing, camera perspectives, paralinguistic acoustic tempo, and gaze direction in the cinematic text. Results demonstrate that while Harris relies on intellectual paradoxes, animalistic metaphors, and internal narrative alignment to construct psychological depth, Demme's adaptation deepens these archetypes through specialized paralinguistic execution, including Anthony Hopkins's controlled 54 WPM vocal deceleration, sustained non-blinking gaze, and subjective point-of- view (POV) framing. Furthermore, the victim archetype undergoes a critical transformation from passive objectification to professional self-actualization. This paper provides a fully comprehensive framework for intermedial psycholinguistic research within modern philology.
