Anthroponymic systems in uzbek and english folk epics: a comparative analysis

Annotatsiya

This article presents a comparative analysis of anthroponyms (personal names) in two renowned heroic epics, the Uzbek Alpomish and the Old English Beowulf. Both epics reflect the ethical values, social structures, cultural traditions, and linguistic creativity of their respective communities. While Alpomish embodies elements of Turkic cultural heritage alongside Islamic influences, Beowulf reflects the interaction between Germanic heroic traditions and emerging Christian beliefs. Employing a linguocultural approach, the study examines the semantic, cultural, and symbolic meanings of personal names and their role in representing such values as courage, loyalty, kinship, social status, and collective identity. The analysis demonstrates that anthroponyms in both epics function not merely as means of individual identification but also as important cultural markers that preserve historical memory and convey the worldview of the communities represented in the epics.
