Relevance. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the main causes of dry eye syndrome (DES) and a risk factor for postoperative complications in patients after LASIK. Purpose of the study. To evaluate the association between the results of comprehensive preoperative assessment of the meibomian glands using the Me-Check diagnostic system and the presence of clinically significant dry eye syndrome in LASIK candidates. Materials and methods. A crosssectional study included 90 patients (180 eyes) aged 18–45 years who were planning LASIK for myopia and/or astigmatism. Before surgery, all patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, completed the OSDI questionnaire, and were assessed using Me-Check (infrared meibography). Clinically significant DES was defined as OSDI ≥13. Results. Structural changes of the meibomian glands, including marked gland loss according to the Meiboscale (stages 3–4), were detected in approximately one-third of eyes despite relatively low baseline OSDI symptom scores. Conclusion. A single-stage preoperative assessment using Me-Check allows identification of subclinical MGD and patients at increased risk of clinically significant DES, supporting the inclusion of morphological evaluation of the meibomian glands and ocular surface in the standard preoperative screening of candidates for refractive surgery.
