The aim of this work is to synthesize nanostructured luminescent powders of yttrium oxide doped with terbium ions. Y2О3:Tb3+ powders were obtained by thermochemical synthesis (combustion). The sources for the synthesis were nitric acid salts of yttrium and terbium. Organic acids, citric acid and acetic acid, were used as reducing agents and combustible components. It has been established that large porous aggregates with sizes up to 200 microns are formed with citric acid during combustion, and nanostructured finely dispersed powders consisting of nanocrystalline particles with sizes of 39±5 nm are formed with acetic acid. Examination of morphological and structural characteristics using scanning electron microscopy techniques and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the heat treatment of the powders at 900°C and 1100°C for 2 hours increased the crystallinity degree of Y2O3:Tb3+ powder particles and increased their size to 110±10 and 170±10 nm, accordingly. It was found that the obtained powders exhibit luminescence in the visible region of the spectrum centered at 560 nm (green radiation) when excited at a wavelength of 304 nm, and the radiation intensity increases with increasing calcination temperature. The resulting nanostructured Y2О3:Tb3+ powders are promising as effective green light luminophores for a number of optical applications, in particular in LED devices, as well as for being added into paper and polymer materials in security screen printing systems.
