IMPROVING THE ADSORPTION CAPACITY OF ACTIVATED CARBON DERIVED FROM IMPREGNATED WALNUT SHELLS TOWARD ORGANIC AND INORGANIC POLLUTANTS

Annotatsiya

Activated carbons were synthesized from walnut shells by pyrolysis and chemical activation, and their structural and adsorption properties were studied. BET analysis showed that the surface area increased from 285.4 m²/g for WBC to 842.7, 915.2, and 1248.9 m²/g for PAC, ZAC, and KAC, respectively. XRD confirmed the predominantly amorphous structure of all samples, while nitrogen adsorption isotherms revealed Type I behavior for WBC and Type IV behavior for the activated samples. KAC exhibited the highest adsorption performance, with maximum capacities of 421.7 mg/g for methylene blue at pH 10 and 152.4 mg/g for Cu(II) ions at 35°C and 300 mg/L. The results indicate that KOH-activated carbon is a promising adsorbent for removing organic dyes and heavy metal ions from water.
