MONTMORILLONITE AND LAPONITE: PROSPECTS OF THEIR INTERCALATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADSORBENTS BASED ON THEM

Annotatsiya

The article considers montmorillonite and laponite as promising layered silicates for the development of adsorbents and functional materials. The interest in these materials is attributed to their unique structure, interlayer space, high surface area, and ability for chemical modification. Montmorillonite is a natural mineral of bentonite clays characterized by availability, swelling behavior, and high cation-exchange capacity. Laponite is a synthetic layered silicate with a more uniform composition, high dispersibility, and stable physicochemical properties. The paper summarizes main approaches to modification and intercalation of these materials, including acid and soda treatment, ion exchange, introduction of organic cations, surfactants, polymers, and inorganic components. Intercalated forms of montmorillonite and laponite can be used for purification of aqueous and gas media, removal of dyes, phenolic compounds, petroleum products, heavy metal ions, and other pollutants.
