The article examines the problem of the negative impact of stress on an athlete's competitive activity. On the basis of a theoretical analysis of the literature the content of the concept of "stress" is defined, the stress factors of sporting activity of an internal and external nature are specified together with the features of their manifestation, and it is recommended to cultivate in athletes the volitional qualities needed to form stress resistance, to raise self-esteem, to develop creative abilities and to apply various methods of mental self-regulation.
