Introduction. Bonnie Garmus’s Lessons in Chemistry presents a complex literary exploration of science, gender, and social power. Although the novel is often recognized as a story about feminism and personal independence, it also provides an important critique of how scientific knowledge is produced, distributed, and validated within unequal social systems. The protagonist Elizabeth Zott is a brilliant chemist whose professional identity is constantly challenged by patriarchal institutions that question women’s intellectual abilities. The concept of epistemic injustice, developed by Miranda Fricker, describes situations in which individuals are harmed specifically in their capacity as knowers. Fricker argues that “epistemic injustice occurs when someone is wronged specifically in their capacity as a knower”. In Lessons in Chemistry, Elizabeth experiences this injustice when her scientific expertise is ignored because of her gender.
