Behavior as an object of semiotic and philological analysis: the british communicative context

Annotatsiya

This article examines nonverbal communication and behavior as culturally organized systems rather than biological spontaneity. Drawing on the semiotic traditions of Pierre Bourdieu and Yuri Lotman, the study analyzes how behavior functions as a culturally encoded text subject to social interpretation. Special attention is given to British communicative culture, where spatial distance, temporal organization, and facial expressions—particularly the smile—serve as regulated forms of politeness and social self-control. The analysis of lexical and phraseological representations of smiles in English demonstrates how culture codifies nonverbal acts according to their pragmatic and emotional connotations. It is concluded that etiquette and everyday behavior represent semiotic phenomena through which cultural norms, social hierarchies, and interpersonal attitudes are expressed and maintained.
