The conceptualization of willpower in contemporary english motivational discourse: a theoretical approach

Annotatsiya

This article offers a theoretical-linguistic discussion of how the concept willpower is constructed in contemporary English motivational discourse. Drawing on cognitive linguistics, frame semantics, and pragmatic theory, the article identifies three intersecting layers: the lexical-semantic configuration of the willpower field (will, willpower, self-control, self-discipline, grit, mental toughness), the frame-structural inventory of slots that organize willpower-events, and the pragmatic-rhetorical strategies through which motivational authors invite readers to cultivate willpower. The discussion outlines two dominant conceptual metaphors, like Willpower Is A Muscle and Willpower Is A Limited Resource and characterizes their pragmatic consequences. The article contributes to the theoretical typology of motivational discourse and to the cross-linguistic study of volitional concepts.
