This study explores the intricate synthesis of moral philosophy and literary realism in the works of Iris Murdoch. By examining her critical engagement with French existentialism, specifically Jean-Paul Sartre, and her assimilation of Neoplatonic ideals, the research delineates Murdoch’s unique framework of “Goodness” and “Perfection”. Central to this analysis is the concept of “unselfing”, a neologism Murdoch uses to describe the transcendence of the ego and the redirection of “attention” away from self-centered fantasies toward the objective reality of others.
