Annotatsiya

This article examines the formation of sport terminological units in English and Uzbek from a comparative linguistic perspective. It focuses on derivation as the primary word-formation mechanism, including prefixation, suffixation, and infixation, and analyzes their degree of productivity in both languages. The study demonstrates that suffixation - particularly with affixes such as -ing, -ion, and -er/-or - is highly productive in English sport terminology, while in Uzbek its productivity varies across different domains. Prefixation is shown to be widely used in English but relatively limited in Uzbek, where many prefixed terms are formed through borrowing. Infixation is identified as a marginal and non - productive process, functioning mainly as an expressive device in English and being nearly absent in Uzbek. The article also highlights the significant role of lexical borrowing in enriching Uzbek sport terminology, especially through mass media. Overall, the research reveals both structural differences and interaction between the two languages in the development of sport-related terminology.
