It is known that Southern American English is considered as a linguistically rich and socially meaningful variety of American English, characterized by distinctive phonological and prosodic features. Furthermore, while previous research has extensively documented segmental features such as vowel shifts, comparatively less attention has been given to supra-segmental aspects, particularly stress and intonation. This study represents a socio-phonetic approach to investigate how prosodic features function both linguistically and socially within SAE (Southern American English). With the help of using qualitative and theoretical analysis supported by existing literature, the study examines patterns of stress placement, rhythmic timing, pitch variation and intonation contours. The data illustrates that SAE is marked by slower tempo, expanded vowel duration, and melodically complex pitch movements, all of which contribute to its recognizable ‘drawl’. In addition, these prosodic features serve as important markers of identity, indexing regional belonging, social class and cultural values. The study highlights the importance of integrating phonetic and sociolinguistic perspectives in understanding language variation and calls for further empirical research in socio-prosody.
