Afghan-american diaspora literature and its distinctive features

Afghan-American diaspora literature emerged as a distinct literary tradition following the waves of Afghan migration to the United States caused by decades of war, political instability, and displacement. This article examines the key features of Afghan- American diaspora literature, focusing on the works of Khaled Hosseini — the most widely read Afghan-American novelist — alongside other writers such as Zohra Saed and Tamim Ansary. The article analyzes how these writers portray themes of exile, memory, identity, cultural hybridity, trauma, and the longing for a lost homeland. Drawing on diaspora theory (Stuart Hall, Homi Bhabha, Salman Rushdie) and postcolonial literary criticism, this study identifies three core distinctive features: the biographical method, the clash of cultures and languages, and the use of time and space as narrative tools. The findings show that Afghan- American literature occupies a unique position — it bridges East and West, preserving Afghan cultural memory while engaging a global readership.
