In this article, the author analyzes the origin and development of the concept of “diaspora” in the social and humanitarian sciences. The concept in question arose as a result of the translation of biblical texts and retained religious connotations for a long time. The first significant shift in understanding the diaspora was due to the differences between the Old and New Testaments. Then, in the XX century, the confessional understanding of the diaspora changed to a narrow ethnic and even racial one, which later allowed the analyzed concept to be included in the theory of nation and nationalism. However, the concept of diaspora differs significantly from “ethnic minority” or “ethnic group”, which has led to the formation of several analytical frameworks for the study of diasporas – “classical”, constructivist and postmodern approaches. The author comes to the conclusion that the concept of “diaspora” continues to develop and receives a new semantic framework.
