In the early Middle Ages, the Sogdian oasis was ruled first by the Ephthalites (420-565), and then by the Turkic Khaganate (552-744) and included dozens of vassal territories such as Samarkand, Kushaniya (Kattakurgan), Ishtikhan, Fai, Maimurg, Kabudon, Panch (Penjikent), Kesh (Shakhrisabz), Nakhshab (Nasaf/Karshi), etc. If we analyze written monuments (Chinese, Byzantine, Sogdian, Arabic and Persian) and numismatic materials of that period, then the fact is confirmed that a certain part of these possessions was under the control of local dynasties, and the rest of the territory was ruled by dynasties associated with the Turkic Khaganate. The Western Turkic Khaganate used certain methods to keep its vassals under control, including granting titles to local dynasties (eltabar), sending a special representative as a controlling governor (tudun), strengthening control in such a way as marrying off their daughters to local vassals, and use of direct and indirect methods of control in management.
