The article highlights the issue of the history of physical culture and sports in Turkestan at the turn of the XIX - XX centuries. It was difficult for the spreaders of the ideas of physical culture and sports. But the intentions were perceived positively, since physical activity and national sports in this region were a natural side of life, one of the forms of leisure. Based on the sources, the mutual influence of Russian and Central Asian cultures in this area is analyzed. The article emphasizes that, simultaneously with the spread of certain sports, the development theoretical thought in the field of physical culture and sports. With the indicated aspects, the prerequisites and ways of development, formation of the science of sports are determined.
