This article, based on historical literature, describes the emergence in the late XIX–early XX centuries in the Surkhandarya region of the industry for the processing of raw cotton and the construction of the Termez cotton ginning plant. The occupation of Turkestan by the Russian Empire, the creation of large enterprises in this region and the collective organization of hired labor caused damage to the existing crafts. The article emphasizes that handicrafts, which form the basis of the national economy of Turkestan, began to be replaced by large industrial enterprises based on agriculture, especially cotton growing.
