PD is the second most common disorder after Alzheimer's disease (AD). PD is pathologically characterized by the loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic innervation, although neurodegeneration is not limited to nigral dopaminergic neurons but also affects cells located in other regions of the neural network. Such widespread pathology makes PD a very heterogeneous disorder and a reliable diagnostic test is not yet available. In this review, we consider the etiology and epidemiology of Parkinson's disease, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic criteria and the current state of research in the field of therapy of this neurodegenerative disease.
