Aim: to study experimentally the insulin-producing function of the pancreas, lipid peroxidation indices and the antioxidant defense system in rats exposed to lead. Materials and methods: The experiment was conducted on 90 outbred male rats weighing 230-270g, divided into 8 groups depending on the intoxication caused: Group 1 - intact, which were administered an equal volume of 0.9% NaCl solution for 30 days; Group 2 - rats that received lead acetate for 30 days - the "lead" group; Group 3 - rats that received potassium dichromate for 30 days - "chromium"; Group 4 - rats that received potassium dichromate + lead acetate for 30 days - "lead + chromium"; Group 5 - alloxan diabetes in intact rats - "control"; Group 6 - alloxan diabetes in rats exposed to lead - "lead + alloxan"; Group 7 – alloxan diabetes in rats exposed to chromium - “chromium + alloxan”; Group 8 – alloxan diabetes in rats exposed to both lead and chromium - “lead + chromium + alloxan”. Results: In the liver of animals of the “lead” group on the 30th day of exposure to lead acetate at a dose of 15 mg/kg body weight, there was a tendency to increase the content of diene conjugates and an increase in the content of malonic dialdehyde by 13% compared to intact animals. Increasing malonic levels dialdehyde in the “lead” group proves the activation of lipid peroxidation processes under metal exposure. The enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase in the lead group increased by 8% compared to animals that did not receive lead acetate. Catalase activity tended to increase. Activation of superoxide dismutase, initiated by an increased content of free radicals, indicates an intensification of the adaptation mechanisms of hepatocytes in response to the accumulation of free radicals. Conclusions: In rats exposed to lead acetate for 15 days, there was no increase in body weight, which indicates the development of lead intoxication. However, on the 30th day of the experiment, an increase in body weight was observed compared to the initial one by 6%, and compared to the 15th day - by 8.5%. The increase in body weight in the “lead” group indicated the animals’ adaptation to new living conditions. Rats exposed to lead for 30 days were characterized by a decrease in the amount of food eaten, as well as diarrhea. In the second week, these phenomena stopped; the animals did not differ in behavioral reactions and the condition of their fur from intact rats, which is also associated with the development of adaptation of animals to the toxic effects of lead.
