ABSTRACT This article discusses several emerging issues in the field of toponymy. Toponymy is the study of place names in a specific area. Along with place names, rivers, lakes, seas, mountains, waterfalls and similar names are called toponyms. Their names are given to them based on the etymology, nature and other specific features of that region and they belong to the class of nouns. In this article, several views of European scientists, including V. A. Nikonov, A. V. Superanskaya, E. Negre, A. Dauza, Kostomarov and others, are cited. In this, some opinions about the relationship between common and common nouns and their classification were obtained.
