ABCTRACT Nicknames, an anthroponymic nominative unit in the languages of the nations of Islamic civilisation, have been used in an active lingual communication. Since Islamic ethics condemns the nicknames denoting offense and discrimination. Therefore, nicknames as an integral part of the language which contains a name, patronymic, surname, sobriquet and a title, have been in a practice since the prehistoric periods of its development. The evidence of giving nicknames or titles, replacing a name by a nickname is an initial realization of the nominative function of the language. An incidental nomination is the very sign of re-analyzing and re-naming of the existing lingual units so that they perform the secondary function. The secondary nomination is based on an associative nature of human thinking and, in its own turn, it gives a chance to discrete the similarities and differences between the characteristics of new names. We investigate the fact of the presence of the nicknames alongside with the names of people since the prehistoric periods of humankind, and the formation of complex system of names, surnames, patronymics, nicknames, sobriquets and titles by this emergence in different social conditions in different languages, including in Uzbek, as well.
