The article explores the pragmatic and ethical aspects of translating Theodore Dreiser’s novel «The Financier». Special attention is given to the rendering of moral categories such as conscience, ethics, and family values in the process of intercultural adaptation. The analysis demonstrates that the translator goes beyond lexical equivalence, aiming to preserve the author’s intention and psychological depth. The study reveals the interaction between pragmatics, ethics, and realism in literary translation. It is concluded that an adequate translation requires a deep understanding of the author’s worldview and the socio-cultural context of the work.
