Annotatsiya

This article provides a comparative examination of the historical evolution of vocalic systems in English and Uzbek, focusing on how phonetic and phonological mechanisms shaped the development of vowels in both languages. The study aims to identify parallel tendencies and distinct differences that emerged as each language underwent its own linguistic, social, and cultural changes. Special attention is given to processes such as vowel shifting, diphthongization, reduction patterns, and qualitative sound mutations, which collectively reveal the structural logic governing the transformation of vowel systems. The methodological approach integrates historical-phonetic analysis, comparative phonology, and the evaluation of socio-cultural influences, allowing the research to trace both internal linguistic developments and external factors shaping vocalism. Findings show that English experienced extensive and rapid shifts – most prominently during the Great Vowel Shift – driven by dialectal diversity, social stratification, and the growing discrepancy between spelling and pronunciation. In contrast, the Uzbek vocalic system evolved more gradually, shaped largely by literary standardization, dialectal interaction, and cultural continuity. Despite these different trajectories, both languages demonstrate universal phonetic principles, including the redistribution of functional load and the tendency toward system optimization. The study provides a solid foundation for further cross-linguistic research in phonetics, phonology, and historical linguistics.
