Research on higher education competitiveness has grown rapidly, yet its coverage of the national system level remains uneven. This article maps a corpus of forty bibliographically verified sources from six research streams onto a matrix of three levels and four components, classifying each source’s gap under a five-type typology. The result reveals bimodal coverage: scholarship clusters at the institutional level and in the global-rankings cell, while the cells constituting the system itself remain thin. Six priority gaps are converted into explicit research questions, yielding a research agenda for rapidly expanding systems, including Uzbekistan.
