We know and perceive the world through our senses. At the same time, there is a process of education, obtained by formal or informal teaching methods. Education and upbringing play an important role in obtaining information about the surrounding reality. In addition to all this, linguistic practices with communication occupy a leading position in expanding the worldview of mankind. This sphere is expressed by the concept of discourse. The article examines the main theoretical approaches to the interpretation of discourse and how a wide range of information about the outside world and society is perceived through it. The range of usage of this term is wide. Discourse is the subject of a comprehensive analysis of such disciplines as anthropology, sociology, sociolinguistics, philosophy, cultural studies, psychology and pedagogical science. Having considered discourse as a multifaceted communicative phenomenon, which is an active process of using language for communication, we will identify its similarities and differences with the text. According to the research done, it turns out that processuality, attachment to time, relevance and implementation in oral or written form are the main indicators that border on the concepts of «discourse» and «text».
