The article provides a comparative analysis of the role and scientific significance of Arabic sources in covering the period of independence of the Chigatay ulus in 1306–1346. The study examines the processes of the ulus' ideological and legal separation from the Yuan Empire in Beijing, based on the works of such authors as Jamal Karshi, al-Umari, and Ibn Battuta. In particular, the assessment of the administrative and economic reforms carried out in Maverannahr during the reign of Kebek Khan and Tarmashirin Khan through the eyes of Arab tourists and historians proves that this period served as the institutional foundation for the Timurid empire.
