This article examines the emergence of enlightenment as a means to overcomebackwardness following Central Asia's incorporation into the Russian colonialsystem. It analyzes the "usuli jadid" method developed by Ismail Gasprinsky, theessence of Jadidism, teaching methodologies in new-method schools, the Russiangovernment's stance towards Jadidist schools, the rise of new-method schools inCentral Asia, and the development of a Jadidist school system among bothnomadic and settled populations.
