The article examines the functions of art in the science of aesthetics and how it is one of the special manifestations of social practice, the role of aesthetic laws and criteria in art, the views of thinkers on art and aesthetics in the history of philosophy, the origin of harmony, symmetry, proportion, consonance, rhythm, dynamics, composition and other aesthetic patterns in the development of aesthetic science, the conditional division into three main periods of the development of aesthetic thought was studied: proto-scientific, classical, post-classical and the role of aesthetic criteria in social development.
