This article draws on an analysis of the present and past to assess the extent to which physical education in its current form can meet the demands of the 21st century. The author argues that radical reform is necessary to ensure the medium- and long-term future of any form of physical education in education. A model-based approach to physical education, student centered, inclusive, and motivating, is proposed as key factors for ensuring the future. It is noted that educators will face a number of difficult decisions in developing their subject while participating in radical reform, while the absence of reform could lead to long-term decline
